Syncing Mileage Data: Apple’s Restrictions

$

iTouch Users from all over have had trouble with many different applications freezing up and having to be reinstalled. Apple has now (hopefully) addressed this with the new upgrade to the iPhoneOS (2.1), for both iPhone and iPod Touch.

However, prior to this, many people have lost the data associated with their apps because of this. I have had a couple inquiries regarding the syncing of mileage logs to the home computer when the device syncs via iTunes. Problem…Apple doesn’t allow it!

It’s true! Developers are not able to write applications that sync/save data during the iTunes sync process. This is why you’ll see a number of applications that email reports (like MileBug), use file transfer apps, or even build custom web sites that allow the backing up of data.

So while this is not the most desirable setup, it’s what Apple has given us to live with. We have looked at building a web application that would allow MileBug users to back up their data, but it just hasn’t happened yet. So for now, please periodically email yourself a report of your data. Making backups is a good habit for any software you use. Enjoy!

How to Remove MileBug Backups from your iPhone

An iPhone MileBug user wrote in asking if there was a way to remove old backup files from his iPhone. There certainly is, and such, I thought there may be others out there wondering the same questions.

WARNING: For either answer, DO NOT DELETE “appData.mbdata”

Short Answer:  via iTunes File Sharing.

Step-by-step answer:

1) Connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, select your iPhone listed on the left
2) Choose “Apps” on the top and scroll down to “File Sharing”
3) Select MileBug and you’ll see your backup files listed on the right
4) Select the files you wish to delete and hit “Delete” on your keyboard
5) DO NOT DELETE “appData.mbdata” as this is your current working database for MileBug

Don’t be afraid to write-in with questions. We would love to help you, and more than likely there are others out there looking for the same answers.

Reports vs. Backups

Some people have written in about not being able to open the .mbdata backup file on their computer, so I thought to clarify the difference between Reports and Backups. This pertains to the iPhone version.

Backups
Under the Backup tab in MileBug, you can create a backup file of all your data. It stays on your phone until you email it to yourself or pull it off using iTunes File Sharing. There is a help guide to iTunes File Sharing at the bottom of the Backup tab. Just click “What is iTunes File Sharing?”. The .mbdata file generated by the backup process is readable only by MileBug and is intended to be used to restore your data if you have problems with your iPhone or get a new iPhone.

Reports
Under the Reports tab, you can generate a human-readable report in either HTML or CSV (Excel or Numbers) format. You may choose the date range, the business(es), the vehicle(s), and the sort criteria. You can preview the report right in MileBug, too! Then hit Send, and the iPhone Email Composer will appear with your report as an attachment. After entering your email address, hit Send on the email composer and your report will arrive in your Inbox shortly.

Happy Taxes Everyone!

White Icon Recommended Solution

For those of you who suddenly have a white icon for MileBug on your iOS device, here is our recommend solution. I wish it were simpler, but it’s really not that bad and the whole process is outlined here. We still don’t have a complete understanding as to why this happened, nor why it only happened to some and not all.

Essentially, you need to backup, uninstall, reinstall, restore from backup. This means the backup inside MileBug, NOT an iTunes backup. Just as an extra safety precaution, you may want to generate a report of all your trips and send that to yourself. Before you begin, make sure you understand “Reports vs. Backups“. So here we go:

Note to Lite Users: MileBug Lite does not support restore from backup. In this case you may choose to continue forward with the white icon, reinstall Lite and lose your data, or upgrade to the full version (see “Transfer Data from Lite to Full“).

  1. Backup
    1. Open MileBug and select the Backup tab at the bottom
    2. Tap the “Back up and Email” button
    3. Email the backup file to yourself.
  2. Uninstall
    1. Tap and hold MileBug icon until icons start “wiggling”.
    2. Tap the X that appeared in the upper-left corner of the MileBug icon.
    3. Confirm Delete
    4. Press Home button to stop “wiggling”
  3. Reinstall
    1. Open App Store on device
    2. Search for MileBug
    3. Tap “Install”
    4. Apple tracks your purchases so you won’t have to repurchase.
  4. Restore from Backup
    1. Use iTunes File Sharing to put your backup file into MileBug
      (see screenshot below)
    2. Launch MileBug on your iPhone/iPad/iTouch.
    3. Open Backup Tab and Select “Restore From Backup”
    4. Choose the backup file in the picker (probably only one there)
    5. Tap “Restore Data”
